Guest sentiment
A snapshot of what local diners frequently mention about this location.
"We went on a Saturday and expected it to be rammed but we got a table straight away. The tea room is like stepping back in time, very quaint and traditional. Service was quick and efficient and the cream tea was delicious, good size too. The earl grey tea was lovely"
"A good spot for a cuppa. I think the house blend might be Yorkshire Tea or something - just teabags. The loose leaf teas are put straight into the pot rather than into a strainer inside the pot which makes them very strong by the second cup. They are happy to give out extra hot water though and the staff were friendly. A small range of teawares and tea in the little shop at the front."
"Great place and surprisingly calm for the touristic centre of York. Staff always lovely. I first visited in 1972 with my Grandparents and still love to have lunch here."
"Quaint tea shop and cafe with lots of food options. I had the toad-in-the-hole special: a giant Yorkshire pudding with gravy and sausages...great except I think it was powdered gravy, not much taste. Service was prompt and friendly and even Saturday 12:30 we didn't have to wait. Lots of interesting jams for sale as well as tea."
"Me and my parents stumbled across this tea room today and it's amazing. The decorations are amazing. It's so cozy, the music is so calming and slow. The furniture is even amazing. I had the soup and a glass of cordial and it was so refreshing and nice. So flavorful. The bread was so fluffy and sweet. If I could give it 100 stars out of 10 I would Would definitely come again"
"We visited during October half term with two little ones in tow. I spotted the children’s menu advert in the window and thought it would be worth a try. We were seated straight away (there’s plenty of seating upstairs too) and we managed to sit in a corner where our nearly 2 year old wouldn’t “escape”. The children’s menu was perfect for our two. Options like eggs, beans or cheese on toast (served with some crisps, tomato and cucumber) and sandwiches with the same accompaniment. Both children enjoyed their food (a huge feat for us, so thank you) and we enjoyed ours too. The only minor fault was that the side salad was dry and didn’t come with a dressing, but we really should have asked. We were chuffed with this find, thank you to the team for their service and patience with a young family. We didn’t feel out of place. Also, the toilets were really clean and had changing facilities for little ones."
"Delightfully traditional tea rooms tucked away in the Shambles with a lovely relaxed atmosphere and good food. We had cream teas for two with warm scones, and a generous supply of house-blend tea for £25; good prices for a tourist centre. The waitresses were friendly and attentive, but left you to enjoy your meal for as long as you wanted. Would definitely recommend."
"We tried this tea room out, it was a nice little tea room, the teas were lovely and they served some nice cakes"
